Definite Changes to Pardon Legislation:
The federal government has proposed new legislation regarding the creation of ‘record suspension’ to replace the current pardon system. The terminology itself will also change; the term “pardon” will gradually be phased out in favour of a more narrowly defined term “record suspension”. This is only the first major change; to read about more proposed legislation changes, read here to find out!
What is “Record Suspension”?
Record suspension is a new term created by the government, and its exact definition is still unknown. Our current understanding of the proposed legislation and its terminology is:
- It will be harder for people to remove their criminal record, and in some cases impossible!
- Record suspensions may also become much more difficult for people with multiple, sexual or violent convictions to get.
- The time that must pass before you are eligible to apply may increase.
